Who We Are
Crosstown Learning Center is a 3-star, nationally accredited child care center. We are licensed by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) and serve children ages six weeks through pre-K. We have two infant rooms, three toddler rooms, and a variety of preschool rooms, including a TPS Pre-K classroom, for which enrollment is open in February of each year. For a list of paperwork needed to enroll your child in any of our programs, please visit this page.
Crosstown was the first nationally accredited child care center in north Tulsa, achieving our 3-star status and national accreditation through the National Association for the Education of the Young Child (NAEYC) in 2001. The support, emphasis and encouragement Crosstown teachers receive during their pursuit of higher education is part of what makes our school special. In accordance with NAEYC’s support of more education for teachers, the teachers at Crosstown are working on obtaining degrees or have a professional development plan in place to further their education in the field of Early Childhood Education.
In November 2011, Crosstown was part of a national research study on autism when we began the Early Foundations Program at our center. In Early Foundations, children at risk for placement on the autism spectrum are taught half-days, in a one-on-one setting, five days a week. For more about Early Foundations and one of our favorite Early Foundations kids, Liam, please take a moment to watch this news story from KOTV-6 anchor and Crosstown supporter Terry Hood.
Teaching Strategies Gold is used in each classroom. Our curriculum lets us perform ongoing assessments of our children through documentation. Lesson-planning is geared specifically to the individual child and offers opportunities for parents to become involved in their child’s learning.
We are open 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. We offer tours by appointment (call 918-582-1457) and during non-COVID times, welcome parent volunteers with open arms.
Crosstown’s History
Crosstown Learning Center was established as a child care center directly supported through the Second Presbyterian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma in September 1969 in order to provide quality child care for Tulsa’s professional families who were working downtown. In 2000, the board of directors of Crosstown filed with the State of Oklahoma to become a non-profit organization.
In the 1970s and ’80s, the neighborhood in which we were located began to deteriorate. Slowly, our center became more and more dependent on families with children who used DHS subsidies to assist with child care costs. As our population changed, we began the accreditation process and became the first child care center located in north Tulsa to earn national accreditation through NAEYC (National Association for the Education of the Young Child).
In April 2004, the old Second Presbyterian Church was closed and the building sold to a new congregation. In June 2004, the new owners of the building asked Crosstown to find a new home. We launched a capital campaign and within a few months, purchased a new (old) church within walking distance of our old facility. We moved into our new home, debt-free, in June 2005.
January 12, 2016, Crosstown broke ground on a brand-new, updated school and community center on its present site. The new building opened to our families Tuesday, November 15, 2016, and it is a joy to come here each day! We are proud to be grounded in the community of the Kendall-Whittier neighborhood and excited to be participating in its rebirth and revitalization through the completion of the first new construction project in this area in decades.
